Siteimprove
The free Siteimprove browser extension can be used to test web pages for common accessibility errors. While no automated accessibility tester can find every error, it's a great first step.
Browser Extension
Download and install the Siteimprove extension for your web browser:
- Microsoft Edge Add-ons: Siteimprove Accessibility Checker
- Google Chrome Web Store: Siteimprove Accessibility Checker
After you install it, find it in your browser Extensions list. Click the "pin" button to make it show on your browser's toolbar. Browse to a web page you want to test and click the Siteimprove button (blue-circle-with-a-white-s) in your toolbar.
IMPORTANT: Set Your Filters
The first time you use the Siteimprove extension, be sure to set the Filters so that it only tests the requirements you need to test:
- Click the Siteimprove icon in your browser toolbar -- the Siteimprove Accessibility Checker window should open.
- Click the Filters button
- Click the Conformance Select button
- Select:
- Level A
- Level AA
- WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices
- Click Confirm and Apply Filters
Check before Publishing
If you are using a web content management system like Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), you can use the Siteimprove browser extension to test pages before they are published.
In AEM, click the "Page Information" button near the upper left and select "View as Published". Then run the Siteimprove extension. (For other systems, look for View as Published, Preview, etc. and do the same.)
