STEAM Newsletter Vol. 30
New Design for Summer Opportunities
To share educational STEAM resources in the most accessible format, we have redesigned the DoIT STEAM Newsletter in a new platform beginning this month. The sections of the newsletter are the same as previous versions but are reorganized and streamlined to increase readability. We hope you find the information, events, and opportunities helpful! Please share your feedback regarding the new layout if you have suggestions for improvement by emailing DoIT.STEAM@illinois.gov.
Let off some STEAM with these fun activities!
Recent News on STEAM
"New images taken by NASA’s Perseverance rover may show signs of what was once a rollicking river on Mars, one that was deeper and faster-moving than scientists have ever seen evidence for in the past. The river was part of a network of waterways that flowed into Jezero Crater, the area the rover has been exploring since landing more than two years ago."
"A recent study, scheduled to be presented at an upcoming computer vision conference, demonstrates that AI can read brain scans and re-create largely realistic versions of images a person has seen. As this technology develops, researchers say, it could have numerous applications, from exploring how various animal species perceive the world to perhaps one day recording human dreams and aiding communication in people with paralysis."

"Arts foster scientific success" -Dr. Temple Grandin
This series is dedicated to showing how art and creativity play a crucial role in our society within the STEAM fields.
"Why would an art historian need to learn how to code? For Bárbara Romero Ferrón, a Getty graduate intern, big data provides a new way of understanding 19th-century art history...With data culled from sources like Getty Vocabularies and archival catalogs, Romero Ferrón creates elaborate, colorful data visualizations showing the links between Spanish artists who exhibited work together, which appear as nodes in the network. To create these visualizations, she uses an open-source software called Gephi and processes the information with the programming language Python."
