DOJ Extends Deadline for Rule on Web Accessibility
On April 20, The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) extended the deadline for its Rule on Web Accessibility from April 24, 2026 to April 26, 2027 (2028 for small local governments).
This rule requires government web sites, documents, and applications to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. The same requirement already applies under the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), so the extension only changes when the DOJ may begin taking additional enforcement actions.
Illinois agencies have made significant progress in improving web accessibility, and the extended timeline provides welcome opportunity to build on this momentum.
